A new enquiry is a race you cannot see
A homeowner with a problem does not ring one plumber and wait. They search, they see three or four names with decent reviews, and they ring them in turn. Nobody tells you that you were second on the list. You just never hear from them again.
For an urgent job, the one who answers first, or replies first, is usually the one who gets it. On a dripping tap, they may wait for the firm they like the look of. On no heating in January, they will not.
What UK callers say they do
- 37% would hang up within 60 seconds and ring a competitor instead.
- Only 6% would leave a voicemail rather than wait for an answer.
- Almost one in four (24%) would switch to another way of getting in touch.
These come from a YouGov survey of 2,046 UK adults, carried out for Answer4u, a call-answering firm, in June 2026. They are what people say they would do, so read them as a guide, not a law. Its source is at the foot of this page.

How to reply in seconds from a job
You cannot take a call with your arms in a cylinder cupboard, and you should not try while you are driving. What you can do is make sure a reply goes without you. A missed-call text back in your firm's name does that: the caller knows within seconds that a real firm has their call and will ring them, and they tell you the job by text while you finish.
Then ring them as soon as your hands are free, and you ring already knowing what the job is and where. How missed-call text back works.
Straight answers
- Is a text as good as answering?
- No, and it is not meant to be. Answering is best. A text is what stops them ringing the next firm when you cannot answer, so the call back you make ten minutes later is still wanted.
- What if I am driving?
- Leave the phone alone. The text goes by itself, and the missed call and their reply are waiting when you stop.
- What does Slate OS cost?
- £249 a month, one plan. The first 25 firms pay £199 a month for as long as they stay. You get 14 days free from the day you start, and if you are not happy within 14 days of your first payment, you message us and we refund it in full.
